Germany online shopping has seen a gradual increase, with online sales growing by 0.2 percent in the second quarter of this year compared to the same period last year. This marks the first market growth in two years.
This information is reported by the Bundesverband E-Commerce und Versandhandel Deutschland (Bevh). The primary driver behind the growth of Germany online shopping is the sales of digital services, such as travel bookings and ticket purchases.
This category saw a notable increase of 4.2 percent, reaching 3.72 billion euros in the second quarter. In the first half of the year, it surged by 8.4 percent, amounting to 6.45 billion euros.
Growth Across Product Ranges in Germany Online Shopping
The report highlights that sales grew in 12 of the 19 product ranges surveyed among consumers. Food orders showed the strongest growth, with a 6.2 percent increase to 1.004 billion euros in the second quarter. Furnishings, including furniture, home textiles, and household appliances, saw a 1.6 percent increase during the same period.
However, despite these positive signs, the significant drop in sales over the past years has not been fully recovered. For German e-commerce companies to truly benefit, the current growth of Germany online shopping needs to continue. Nearly half of B2C online retailers surveyed by Bevh indicated that German and European legislation is hindering e-commerce growth. Additionally, the rise of Asian marketplaces like Temu poses a competitive threat to local companies.
In conclusion, while Germany online shopping is showing signs of recovery and growth, sustained progress and strategic adaptations are necessary for long-term success in the e-commerce sector.
